Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West is a community social history and eco-museum located in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Founded in 1984, this museum focuses on the stories and history of the people from this region. This re-design aimed to provide greater connection to the community and revitalise the old crumbling bluestone building. To engage with the site, the new design embraces its contours to create a series of levels that exist within the single space. Each level functions as a study, research and relaxation space which can cater towards small or large groups. The archived materials are placed on show for the visitors to explore rather than being locked away as they were in the previous space. The staggered glass tube façade references the sites former use as a pipe works. As the visitor explores the space and navigates up the levels, they are eventually greeted with the original bluestone building that acts as a more private and intimate space tucked away from the world.
